A remote and windswept South Atlantic archipelago, the Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory located some 400 miles off Argentina’s Patagonian coastline. Argentina calls the islands 'Las Islas Malvinas,' and has never recognized London’s authority.
In 1982, Argentina initiated 'Operación Rosario,' the invasion and occupation of the Falklands.
Although initially successful, the campaign failed, and the British were able to hold on to their remnant of Empire.
Despite defeat, however, Argentina has never abandoned its claim to the islands…

Argentina, nursing a wounded economy, coveting the Falkland’s rich oil deposits, and influenced by a former Nazi, invades once again!
British Crown Prince Albert—an attack helicopter pilot fresh off a haunting tour of Afghanistan—is sent to the Falklands for a royal visit, and an affirmation of London’s commitment to the territory and its subjects. Caught in the unfolding operation, Prince Albert must face personal demons, as well as the Argentine commando sent to hunt him down.

“Crown Jewel” is an exciting action-filled military thriller. The novella represents the first book of the author’s “Battle for the Falklands” series, though can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone read.

Crown Jewel The Battle for the Falklands Book 1 edition by Peter von Bleichert Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

It is difficult to tell a story about the military in today's terms without boring a reader with seemingly endless details of equipment, weapons, and explanations about what acronyms mean, but Bleichert managed to tell a gritty, modern drama about the military without losing the reader in the details. However, the author is much more than a military buff that writes as a hobby; Bleichert has a powerful way with words, and with creating characters very quickly, so that we can picture them in our minds by building up all of the referential comparisons into a composite face, or personality.

Bleichert is also very good at building tension through exposition, a difficult achievement in any section where an author is telling rather than showing. I particularly liked how the book balanced between both the past, present, and possible future. A reader learns about World War 2, the Falklands War, a somewhat factual depiction of the present day reality in the area of Argentina and the Falklands, as well as a fictional future from Bleichert's creative mind. Being able to combine those elements shows real skill, especially since you didn't lose me in the transitions, and the entire thing read as one contiguous story.

I wish it had been a bit longer, and I think some of the more intense scenes involving Prince Edward could have been beefed up a bit. The author has a gift with words, and yet most of it is shown off in not boring us with military details. A little less of that sort of exposition, and more interaction and dialogue would probably make the book even better. All in all, an enjoyable read, and an author that I will keep my eye out for in the future.

Crown Jewel The Battle for the Falklands Book 1 edition by Peter von Bleichert Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Having already read a novel by Peter von Bleichert, I expected "Crown Jewel The Battle for the Falklands" to be a great read and I was not disappointed. Von Bleichert is a talented author who knows how to build tension and combine it with fast-paced action story.

"Crown Jewel" is set somewhere in the relatively near future where events conspire to trap Prince Albert of England, only surviving son of King Edward, in the Falkland Islands just as Argentina launches another invasion to reclaim the island chain they believe is theirs. Albert is sent with his unit to the Atlantic island chain to show the Union Jack just as the Argentinians come ashore. Though he is ordered out, because of his position as heir to the throne, Albert refuses the order. He reasons that since he was ordered to the island chain as part of his air unit, he must stay and do his duty because he is an Apache pilot.

Unknown to his family or the military, Albert had recently returned from an emotion-jarring tour in Afghanistan where his gunship took part in an action that claimed a family and its little girl. The family was, apparently, being used as a human shield for an Al-Quaeda bigshot. (In truth, the terrorist organization really does operate that way, though many here do not realize it. Von Bleichert is the first author we know of to detail it so cleanly and pointedly. It is an example of just how well the author can set a scene, paint the word picture and draw back, leaving the action to occur. There are few that do it as well.)

The memories of that action affect Albert. He is almost a sleep-walker thinking about the little girl and drinking his way through his daily life to ease the pain. Over and over again, Albert sees his Hellfire rocket strike the terrorist-bearing SUV and remembers he had seen the little girl and her doll getting into the vehicle. This sets him on an emotional roller coaster as he just cannot process or rationalize an action that claimed the little girl and her innocent family and the terrorist. The little girl haunts him for sometime to come, even as he settles into the gunship again behind his co-pilot, weapons officer and best friend, Lt. Donnan.

The situation here is quite different and desperate. In Afghanistan, Albert was part of a large force that backed him up. In the Falklands, he and Donnan are on their own. They are members of a tiny military opposition that does make a good accounting of itself despite the overwhelming odds. Still, numbers don't lie and the numbers simply said Argentina would win this time.

Meantime, his refusal to leave sets off a chain reaction that Albert doesn't realize. The problem is that he is a royal, heir to the throne, and a rich plum for the Argentinian Army. The Argentinians believe that they can use him as a leverage to encourage Britain to give up the islands permanently.

The chain reaction continues to ripple through the fighting as his ship is targeted and brought down hard. Knowing he is down, special units, under Major Vargas, a soldier with a sadistic streak, redouble their efforts to find him.

For the British, it is a time of panic as they cannot find the royal. Meanwhile, ever-loyal British subjects come to Albert's aid though they also know they are facing overwhelming odds. He is saved first, just in the nick of time, by Linda Jones, her father and little girl, Annie. Her father pays a price for his stubbornness in not yielding Albert's whereabouts to Vargas, as do Linda and Annie. They become unknowing puppets in the unfolding drama as they are used as bargaining chips against Albert after their capture by Maj. Vargas.

This ignites a strong secondary plotline, Albert's transformation. Albert has been haunted for months by his actions in Afghanistan, constantly seeing a little girl and her stuffed toy in his waking and sleeping moments. He drinks to ease the pain, but all the whiskey in Great Britain cannot ease his guilt. This is the reaction of a little boy, who, rather than facing his pain and conquering it, tries to run from it. In this case, though, the little boy is a man who is able to run into the bottle. It takes the heroic acts and ultimate sacrifice that they make to start his growth into a man. Before our eyes, we see the him realize that before he can lose the pain he must forgive himself.

This realization spurs his growth as a man and he realizes he has a sacrifice to make, too. He has to save the woman and little girl who saved him first. Saving Linda and Annie now centers him and his thoughts, they become his reason for living as he realizes the sacrifices they made were for him, a man they did not know, but a figure they did know.

It is a complicated picture and von Bleichert fills the frame very well as he subtly describes Albert's transformation. Though he is still haunted by the death of the little girl, she is no longer in his dreams because he grows, realizing he had to live for Linda, Annie, Donnan and the others who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It sobered him.

His transformation is central to von Bleichert's tale, the first of three novellas in the series. In his skilled hands, von Bleichert confirms his place among the best writers of this or any other year. Von Bleichert's use of language and his descriptions resonate perfectly with the taut pace of the novella. He is uncanny with the precision of his writing and his character-building. His talent is natural and very deep. You can easily see that in the way in which he grabs you and pulls you into the story and keeps you there until the very end. It is amazing how the war just becomes the canvas on which von Bleichert paints his action novella.

Though short, "Crown Jewel," is an excellent start to the series. It is a great read for a day when you need a little action/adventure yarn to keep you going. As you can tell, I like this book and I hope to get to read the other two when they are out.
So I’ve never really jumped in the “modern military espionage thriller” side of the book pool. The only connection I have ever had to Tom Clancy is that I played a Rainbow Six game on my PC 10 years ago, and hearing that he passed away. So I am not that well versed in this genre of books, but after seeing that it was a historical with a “hypothesized and fictional future” part of the story, I decided to check this out.

While on a royal visit to the Falkland Islands, to show the world that they cared about the land, and the people living there, Price Albert finds himself In A Can… pickle, sorry, finds himself in a pickle, when he is kidnapped by Argentinian revolutionaries, trying to take back what they claim to be theirs. (in a) Can Prince Albert survive this ordeal? Well, not to give anything away, but you probably won’t actually find out, because this is the first part of a trilogy…

Overall, I thought this book was pretty fascinating. I never think that I will enjoy movies like Thirteen Days, because I think that it will be so far over my head, that I just won’t understand what’s going on, and not enjoy it. Howver, that was not the case with this book. The author seemed to know what he was talking about, and he was able to convey that information to the reader fairly well. All of that, within an intriguing mystery thriller-esque story, was really entertaining. I recommend it.

Side Note Prince Albert In A Can is a type of tobacco, normally sold in a can. I did not know that, I had to look it up…
